History of Modern Wiltshire by Richard Colt Hoare [Stourhead - Rare Book]

The History of Modern Wiltshire by Sir Richard Colt Hoare. First edition, six folio volumes. London: John Nichols and Son, 1822-43. Bound in half calf, lettered and decorated in gilt, with marbled endpapers. Each volume bears three armorial bookplates, including one for Glenconner (circa 1911) and two for the Buckler family, displaying their motto "Infidelis Ad Mortem." The set also includes a tipped-in engraved portrait of John Buckler and a Buckler family genealogy. Additionally, two volumes are inscribed "From the Author." Richly illustrated throughout with frontispieces, engraved maps and views, and hand-painted armorials.

This finely bound six-volume set, with its Buckler bookplates, tipped-in portrait, and accompanying family tree, strongly suggests it was a presentation copy to John Buckler (1770-1851), the accomplished topographical artist commissioned by Sir Richard Colt Hoare to execute many of the drawings and architectural views engraved in the work, including notable depictions of Hoare's seat at Stourhead.
17 1/2 x 12 in. (44.5 x 30.5 cm.)
