Painting of Dardanelles Gun, Vice Admiral William Wilson [British Navy - Military - Cannon]

Signed "W.W." and inscribed "Dardanelles / 10th Sept. 80" at lower right. Possibly by Vice Admiral William Wilson (1848–1921), who was gifted a 660-pound marble shot from a Dardanelles cannon in the late nineteenth century, later installed at his manor house at Clyffe Pypard in Wiltshire, England.

Inscribed in ink below painting "24 inch bronze gun at Chanak with seven marks of shot on muzzle and in bore made during action with Sir J. Duckworth's squadron 1807 A.D. Two marble shot weight 660 lbs each were given to Lieutenant William Wilson, commander HMS Cygnet in Sea of Marmara in 1878-79 by Pasha in command at Dardanelles. The gun is 318 years old...The shot was sent to Clyffe Pypard at the end of Cygnet's commission, and was there in 1917..."

The Dardanelles Gun is a monumental Ottoman siege cannon cast in 1464 and now preserved in the collection of the Royal Armouries. Along with other massive cannons of the same type, such as the example depicted in this painting, the gun remained in service more than three centuries later. During the Dardanelles Operation of 1807, when a Royal Navy squadron used these weapons to fire on British ships. In 1866, during a state visit to Britain, Sultan Abdulaziz presented the Dardanelles Gun to Queen Victoria.
Sight: 10 1/4 x 10 1/4 in. (26 x 26 cm.), Frame: 11 1/2 x 11 1/2 in. (29.2 x 29.2 cm.)
