WWII US Navy Nuclear Submarine Plans & Schematics, Boston and Portsmouth Naval Shipyards [Military]

A group of papers belonging to E. Eugene Allmendinger (1917–2008), engineer and naval architect who, during World War II, was involved in submarine design and construction at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and the Boston Naval Shipyard. The collection includes a confidential World War II-era record book containing extensive handwritten notes on submarine design and engineering, with dozens of detailed schematics and technical plans. Also present is a 1945 letter from U.S. Navy Commander C. W. Flenniken advising Allmendinger on testing conducted at the Portsmouth Navy Shipyard; loose manuscript notes; printed publications relating to submarine design; and dozens of business cards from fellow naval engineers, professors, military personnel.

Allmendinger graduated from the University of Michigan in 1941 with a degree in naval architecture. He later received his M.S. degree in mechanical engineering from the University of New Hampshire. After leaving the U.S. Navy in 1946, he taught at the U.S. Naval Academy, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and University of New Hampshire, where he also served as associate director of the Marine Program and director of Marine Operations. He received a letter of commendation for outstanding service to the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and was named a Society Fellow to the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers.
