Naval Engineering Photograph Album and Log Book [MIT - US Navy]

Photograph album and notebook belonging to naval engineer Harold A. Everett (1880-1970), then Professor of Naval Architecture at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, documenting a 1905 study trip to Dunbarton, Scotland, and Hamburg, Germany, undertaken to examine contemporary ship mechanics and construction. Accompanied by Everett's manuscript notebook from the journey, recording daily observations, technical data, sketches, and accounts of visits to shipyards in the United Kingdom and Germany, including time spent at the Leven Shipyard. The album contains approximately 89 candid photographs, some captioned, depicting various aspects of shipbuilding, yard facilities, vessels under construction, and related industrial scenes.

Professor Everett was a prominent figure in the early development of advanced naval engineering education in the United States. A 1902 graduate of MIT's Department of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering, he later joined the faculty in 1904. In September 1916 he was recruited to serve as the first Professor of Marine Engineering in the U.S. Naval Academy's Postgraduate Department, the precursor to the Naval Postgraduate School. His appointment came at a pivotal moment, as the U.S. Navy expanded its technical training programs during World War I. Everett later served as head of mechanical engineering at Pennsylvania State College.
